Mongoose is a musical melty-pot, comprising the combined vocal chords, instrument-playing and song-crafting abilities of four women – Molly O’Mahony, Ailbhe Dunne, Muireann Ní Cheannabháin and Cara Dunne. Their music is an amalgamation of styles, with nods to artists as diverse as Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac and Beyoncé. All four members are songwriters, which allows for an ever-evolving soundscape. Their debut, self-titled album, released in May 2015 is testament to this. This “harmony-lead collection of rambunctious folk pop” incorporates everything from Russian polkas and delicate folk melodies to aching ballads and playful tales of failed love. Celebrated for their live performances in particular, they have made memorable appearances at numerous festivals around the country and abroad, including Other Voices, Body & Soul, Longitude and Electric Picnic since their formation in late 2012. Their latest single ‘Doing Things Wrong’ was released on August 8th 2016. The video to accompany the song is a rallying shout for Ireland to take a stand on repealing the 8th amendment of the constitution. They have just been selected as Dun Laoghaire Rathdown musicians in residence at the Lexicon Library for 2017.
“Original, smart… gorgeous harmonies and an unquenchable joie de vivre make their performance unique.” – Helena Mulkerns
